Gold vs Silver: Which Metal Compliments Me More?

Gold, silver, or both- which one suits me the best? How do I know? If you’re reading this then you likely want to learn how to tell which metal flatters you most.

In order to know which one works best on your complexion, we must learn about undertone.

Undertone is the foundation of a theory called “color analysis”. The undertone of the skin is essentially a hidden layer below your skin that produces either a warm tone or a cool tone. It is the hidden color under your skin. Therefore, a person can either have:

  1. Cool Undertones

  2. Warm Undertones

If you have a cool undertone, then cool tones will flatter you best. Silver is a cool tone, therefore it will compliment your complexion the most.

If you have a warm undertone, then warm tones will flatter you best. Gold is a warm color, therefore it will compliment your complexion the most.

So the important question here is: “How do I know whether I have a cool/warm undertone?”

Here are a few ways you can determine this:

  1. Vein test- Look at your veins in natural daylight. If they appear to have a more blue tint, you are more likely to have cool undertones. If they appear to be more green, you are likely to have warm undertones.

  2. Gold vs Silver test- In natural daylight, grab a mirror, silver fabric and gold fabric. While looking in the mirror, apply the silver fabric and then the gold fabric, alternating between the two. Keep your eyes on your face. You will see a difference! If you face appears more radiant and lively, then you know that this metal works best for you. On the other hand, if you notice your face appears more tired, dull and aging, this metal is not best for you.

  3. Natural Hair Tone- Another method is to look (back) at your natural hair tone. Try to determine whether your natural hair has a more ashy or warm tone. If your natural hair is more ashy, you most likely have a cool undertone. If it’s warm, you most likely have a warm undertone

  4. Best Neutrals- Compare warm and cool neutrals to your skin, wearing no make-up. Test white (cool) versus cream (warm), gray (cool) versus camel (warm), and black (cool) versus brown (warm) against your skin. See if your face becomes more radiant/ washed out. You now already know that radiance= right color.

Remember, if you are wearing the right colors and metals, you will be wearing the clothes. If it’s the wrong color and metal, the clothes will be wearing you. Good colors always have to bring out your natural complexion and beauty.
